September 22, 2014 – Medicines for Humanity (MFH), has honored the Daughters of Charity – Haiti with its 2014 Humanitarian of the Year award. The presentation was made during the annual MFH Humanitarian Awards Dinner held at the Harvard Club in Boston. The Daughters and MFH collaborate on two maternal and child healthcare projects in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti.
When presenting the award, MFH board member, Thomas M. O’Neill stated, “The world sees you working in places full of extreme poverty, despair and violence and asks… ‘Why?’  You see the life-saving impact that you have on the children there and ask… ‘Why not?’  These children are not just your patients… they are your children and live in your hearts.  Thank you for your unique model of healthcare services delivered with unconditional love.”
Sr. Monica De Juan Sanchez, DC, Director Rosalie Rendu Health Center, Cité Soleil, Haiti; Sr. Gloria Del Carmen Herrera Sixco, DC, Director, Lucelia Bontemps Health Center, Sibert, Haiti; traveled to Boston to receive the honor on behalf of The Daughters. In her acceptance speech, Sr. Gloria said, “We try to prevent children from dying each day… and as we try to deal with the overwhelming demands we face… we are grateful for the expertise and experience of the MFH staff and all the resources MFH provides. You have supported our work since before the earthquake… helped us respond to the emergency, and stood by us as we recover and rebuild our capacity. We thank you because we feel your love and your prayers supporting us as we work together to bring better health to the precious children of Haiti.”
The Daughters of Charity and MFH projects have established highly effective maternal and child health clinics in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti.  In addition to assisting the Daughters in increasing the number of children receiving healthcare, essential medicines and nutrition services in Haiti, MFH is also helping to expand health services available to HIV positive pregnant women through the work of community health workers.
Attended by 180 guests, the evening raised more than $300,000 for MFH’s continuing work providing 750,000 essential health services to children in need around the world.
